What is insomnia?
Insomnia is the difficulty of sleeping regularly at night. People who experience insomnia are called insomniacs and face problems while performing their daily tasks since a sound sleep of at least eight hours is necessary for the healthy functioning of an individual.
The reasons behind insomnia are mainly psychological and, in some cases, physical; extreme stress, anxiety, and depression cause insomnia in most people who fall victim to it. Insomnia is a treatable condition where correcting sleeping habits can reverse the condition.
However, the question here is how to correct sleeping habits. In the case of psychological disorders leading to insomnia, it may be challenging to do so by just getting to bed early, etc. Psychological disorders require therapy for the symptoms to vanish.
The elderly are the most prone to sleepless nights since the later stage of life; many psychological issues due to feeling weakness and loneliness, and some prevalent diseases that profoundly affect your mind. They require therapy sessions to get rid of the problem. At home care for the elderly, therapists are present that help the elderly improve their mental health and cure issues like insomnia.
Seven solutions for sleepless nights
Besides psychotherapy and medication, specific remedies can help you get rid of insomnia if it is at a moderate level or if the disorders are mild. Stated below is a list of therapeutic solutions to cure insomnia;
1. Meditation
Psychological problems like stress, anxiety attacks, and depression take over your mind when your body is drenched in negative energies. These energies then affect how you perceive the world and how things happen to you. They disturb your daily routine and peace by throwing you into conditions like insomnia.
Meditation is the best way to remove these energies from inside of you. A 10 minutes meditation daily can help you focus on your own mental and physical health while removing all the worries from your mind. You can see yourself as a better person, and the hurdles coming your way would seem nothing to you. Your peace would be restored, the first step to a comfortable sleep at night
2. Mantra Repetition
Repeating a mantra or positive affirmation can improve mental health by helping the mind to be calm and peace prevails inside you. A study on homeless women found that those who practiced repeating a mantra had reduced insomnia levels more than others.
You can repeat the mantra loudly or in your mind. If you face any distractions, calmly start repeating them while focusing on the words. A good mantra will help you stay focused through its rhythm, as it has a soothing effect on the mind.
3. Yoga
Yoga is practiced worldwide to improve body shape and sleep quality. You can choose a style that focuses more on meditation and is less strenuous. Practicing yoga before bed can bring your mind peace and relieve any worries that may haunt your sleep.
However, it would be best if you practiced yoga with care. If a pose does not suit you, do not force it on yourself, as it may result in a severe injury, as the ligaments may be torn in your attempt to do a challenging pose. Twenty minutes of yoga daily is enough to overcome sleepless nights.
4. Exercise
Exercise boosts the overall health of an individual. The unnecessary waste products in our bodies often lead to a surge in negative energies. The energies take over the mind and disturb the peace of an individual causing many problems, one of which is insomnia.
Insomniacs can practice daily exercise as it frees their body from toxins. It would also distract them from their worries by making them more focused on their physical well-being.
5. Massage
To sleep well at night, your body needs to relax well. If the body is under constant stress, the tiredness would be a hurdle to having a good sleep at night, and you may end up tossing and turning over the bed.
Massage from a professional massager would ease your body from fatigue and improve the flow of blood, which can, in turn, improve your sleep quality.
6. Magnesium
Magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral found inside our bodies as well. Magnesium is known to reduce stress and anxiety. As mentioned earlier, stress and anxiety are the primary reason for insomnia; if you control them, you can improve your sleep cycle.
Add magnesium to your evening bath so it can be absorbed in your skin and circulate through your blood.
7. Lavender oil
Flower essence is used as a therapy to prevent anxiety. Adding lavender oil to your scent diffusers, bath, and bed linen can help you sleep well, as it positively impacts your mind.
